Peace to Mateo (a/k/a Matt Black) is an audio/visual artist and founder of Young Heavy Souls.
Black launched YHS as an imprint to release his debut LP We Buy Gold in the spring of 2011. This fifteen-song hip hop album included collaborations with a number of MCs and producers who would go on to join the YHS roster.
After the first wave of YHS projects, Black released a collaboration album with MCF entitled Black & Friendly. This was the first project Black had produced entirely on his own. Shows supporting that project included sets opening for Black Milk, Talib Kweli, Naughty By Nature and Del the Funky Homosapien.
In 2013 Black released a follow up solo album called Oak Street Market. Black split production duties with other producers. OSM also featured the YHS debut of Vapor Eyes and a guest verse from California rapper Turbo T. Double.
After OSM Black moved to Detroit, MI and began focusing on running YHS. In 2014, Black helped curated the debut Young Heavy Souls compilation Volume One.
2015 marked an evolution in Matt's sound when he released Peace to Mateo. The album is a production showcase with a blend of instrumental hip-hop, electronic, and dance music. He played showed supporting this release in California (at Serenity Gathering Music Festival, and on Culture Remixed Radio), Chicago and Detroit. These shows included projected visuals that were meant to enhance the live experience of the music.
In Fall 2015 Black officially changed his artist name to Peace to Mateo. This new era of music is much more focused on beat music and the exploration of hip-hop and electronic production styles.
