DOOMPOP: Track-By-Track by Zilched

Today marks 2 years since the release of Zilched’s debut LP DOOMPOP, which sources inspiration from singer-songwriter Chloë Drallos’s experiences emerging from adolescence to adulthood and the albums (see: Nirvana’s Nevermind and The Jesus and Mary Chain’s Psychocandy) that helped her navigate the journey.

In addition to offering 25% off DOOMPOP vinyl this weekend with code “DOOMPOP2,” we’re happy to share track-by-track reflections on the record from the artist herself.

BLUE DOOM

A repeating groove inspired by all the krautrock research I did in my free lab time just before graduation. I didn’t know what lay ahead, but something called to me from somewhere. The line about “Blue boredom…” is in reference to DIIV and Sky Ferreira, who were high school heroes of mine.

THE KNIFE

I used to be afraid of sharing a love song, as I was still figuring out what love might be… Hiding sensitivity behind violent images… Passion is passion? Fiona Apple, Jim Reid, and Courtney Love are to thank for this one.

SLEEPER

An attempt to find conviction in my voice, where other continued to dismiss me. The ~ mature enough to disengage ~ part was a fantasy. This one plays like a cheerleader chant in my head.

VELCRO DOG

That spiteful little rant you get out of your system before choosing to be the “bigger person.”

THE MORNING

My favorite. I made some decisions on a new outlook that I carry with me to this day. Long live absurdity, and love live The Cure’s Disintegration!

CRY 4 ME

To feel unseen by someone you would do anything for. This is a sad song about friendship. The friendship has mended since! Another krautrock effort turned DIIV worship…

DARKSIDE

After the party ends… Dancing your mess around.

SIXTEEN

Looking at my own innocence with sympathy for the first time, I had questions for all the “You know what I mean…” rock songs centered around eager young girls.

TEENAGE INSECTS

I wrote this after seeing David Lynch’s painting “I Was A Teenage Insect" and reading words from Nico and Ian Curtis. The song is the rise and fall of internalized anxieties, a New Year’s Eve where everyone had plans but myself… Shortly after writing, I got picked up by surprise and rang in the New Year with a “Celebrity Skin” karaoke duet; the feeling I much prefer to carry with me.

Needless to say, I’m much older now. Even if it’s only been some years since these were all written.

New album in 2023.

See you then.

XOXO Chloë
