Matt Black: How did you get started making music and what is your creative process?
wasaaga.: My first experience making music came at a young age, learning classical piano. After a falling out with classical training, drums became my main instrument, on which I was self-taught. Everything changed once I learned how to make music digitally. Learning about the manipulation of sound became endlessly intriguing to me, and I haven't looked back since.
MB: What was the motivation for your latest single “Moss”
W: This single was something that came out of the creation of my next record. It embodied where the record was bound to go sonically, although it never made it onto the album itself. It's an indication as to where things are headed with my sound.
MB: What city do you live in and how does that influence your music if at all?
W: I'm based in Clarkston, but I'm kind of all over the place in the Metro Detroit area. I think Detroit music inspires the grit behind my sound. However, the wooded areas in Michigan, especially further north, were really what drove the aesthetic of this next record.
MB: What made you want to submit your music to Young Heavy Souls?
W: I've been a fan of the Young Heavy Souls roster for quite a while now. I remember hearing MC Friendly's "Jeffery" for the first time and absolutely loving it. I looked into the album’s production credits, and that led me to discover the rest of the roster. In a way, it's a dream to contribute to a local label that has truly inspired me over the past few years. I'm grateful for it.
MB: What artists are you listening to right now?
W: Lately I'm really loving Obese Ghost Children's SPÖKE record. It's a really interesting and unique take on what hip-hop groups are capable of. Aside from that, I'm a huge fan of the work j^p^n has been doing. He has such a wholesome consistency that still remains endlessly diverse. I've also been loving the work of ewonee (especially his album Radiance), and Bruno Sanfilippo's latest record, "The Poet."
MB: Anything upcoming you want to promote? Shows, releases, videos etc?
W: I'm currently finishing my new EP, eevee. which I will be working with Young Heavy Souls to release this summer.
