Artist Biography

Tony Simon, a/k/a Blockhead, has been making and releasing utterly distinctive, funky and emotive music for the last two decades. After a brief stint as a rapper, he realized his calling was behind the boards and not on the mic – and from there he began to produce beats. Since making that decision, he's kept pretty busy: carving a niche as a sought-after underground beatmaker that people call when they want something special.

In 2017, Young Heavy Souls reissued Blockhead's 2007 album Uncle Tony's Coloring Book on a limited double LP.

In 2019, Blockhead teamed up with Eliot Lipp as Lipphead. Lipphead released their self-titled EP on 7” vinyl.

Press

  • “Over the years, Simon has also learned how to transform the gritty, big-footed underground hip-hop sound into lush, cinematic instrumental music.” - Chicago Reader

  • “Far from experimental, Blockhead is a new breed of hard-edge traditionalist with few frills and a serious ear for samples.” - Pitchfork

  • “It’s the type of track (It’s Raining Clouds) that sounds like a mission statement, a statement of intent to push his sound into places it hasn’t gone before, even as it sounds as natural coming out of him as anything on those first two albums” - Pop Matters

  • The record (Funeral Balloons) continues Block's penchant for slinking grooves coupled with esoteric samples and wry song titles” - Vice
